Singles, and the occasional twin

Most small engines are single-cylinder, so the total is just one cylinder's swept volume — set the cylinder count to 1. Mid-size and larger outboards, and some generators, use twins or more; set the real count and the panel multiplies per-cylinder cc for you. A mid outboard twin at roughly 61 mm × 60 mm per cylinder lands near 351 cc across its two pots.

Why cc matters down here

Small-engine displacement drives kart class rules, sets the power you can expect from a tool or generator, and decides which parts fit. Karting classes in particular are cc-limited, so a big-bore piston that lifts displacement past a class line can affect eligibility — worth calculating the new cc before the piston goes in, not after tech inspection.

Two-stroke or four-stroke, same swept volume

Plenty of trimmers, older outboards and some karts are two-strokes. The swept-volume geometry is identical — π/4 × bore² × stroke — so the cc comes out the same way. The difference is in power delivery (a two-stroke fires every revolution), not in how you measure its size.

Measuring a tiny engine

Small numbers still reward care, because bore is squared. Use an inside micrometer or bore gauge across the cylinder where you can; on the smallest engines a caliper across the bore is a reasonable starting estimate. Stroke is the crank throw doubled. And if an engine has worn or been rebored oversize, enter the measured bore — the extra cc is small but can matter for a class check.
